The history of the family business began in the late 1940s, when Benoît, son of Ernest Lacroix, residing in Weedon in the Eastern Townships, decided to vary his income by selling army surplus clothing. He began his activities by going door to door with his truck equipped for this purpose. It was in 1952 in Magog that he opened his storefront business, which would bear the name of “Surplus de guerre Enr.”. It is a male clientele that frequents the establishment and mainly buys clothes for work, leisure, hunting and fishing.

In 1965, Benoît embarked on a new business project and his brother Jean-Louis succeeded him in the management of the company. He took the opportunity to change the name of the company to “Magasin Jean-Louis Lacroix Inc.” in order to attract more customers. He introduces formal wear to his existing collections.

In the early 80s, it was the turn of the youngest brother, Gabriel, to take over the family business. He joins forces with Benoît Roy, his new partner, who was already a long-time employee under the leadership of Jean-Louis. Another breath of fresh air hits the boutique: The business becomes “Mercerie Lacroix Inc.”.

The 90s will be a pivotal period for the “Mercerie Lacroix”. The arrival of large chains in shopping centers forces Gabriel and Benoît to specialize more in order to remain competitive. However, the building will be burned down in February 1992 and the shop will move two more times before finally relocating to the current address in 1999.

In 2006, a second generation took over the management of the company: it was Simon, the son of Gabriel, who had worked with him for six years. In February 2006, he carried out major renovations to the premises to make it more up-to-date, trendier and more modern. Gradually, he introduced clothing and shoes for women and adapted to the tastes of his clientele who were looking for comfort and a casual look.

In 2014, the “Mercerie Lacroix” changed its name to LACROIX ESPACE BOUTIQUE INC. A significant name for its presence on the web. It is now possible to shop at any time from the comfort of your living room.
